Some people like to say "the public". For my part, I prefer to use the singular, considering that there is only one audience, undifferentiated, like the crowds. On the other hand, the composition of this unique group varies with each performance, made up of an infinite variety of spectators. So many individualities that give the other side of the play its resolutely different colours.
